Love your Heart Muscle: Happy Heart Month

Heart Disease is still the number one killer of humans in the USA, so Heart Health is an important topic and it is importnat to Love your Heart Muscle. This week I am focusing on Neuro-Wellness and the role of the Nervous System in the Functional Medicine approach.

Heart Health isn’t just about Cholesterol and Blood Pressure it is also about how we live, love and repsond to stressors daily. When we talk about heart health, most conversations focus on lab numbers and risk factors. Those matter a lot — however they’re only part of the story. Your heart is deeply influenced by your thoughts, emotions, relationships, purpose, and the way you care for yourself day after day.

In many traditions, the heart has always been seen as more than a pump. Ancient cultures believed the heart was the seat of the soul, the center of our emotional and energetic life. Even today, we feel this truth intuitively — heartbreak hurts, grief feels heavy in the chest, and joy can feel expansive and light.

True heart health begins with how we love and live well.

Love Well, Starting With You

Loving well means nurturing meaningful relationships with compassion and presence. But just as important — and often overlooked — is how you relate to yourself.

One of the most powerful heart-supportive practices is KIST: Kind Inner Self Talk.

Some Examples of KIST Phrases:
“It’s okay to make mistakes; everyone does sometimes, this is where I learn”
“I am doing the best I can with what I have right now”.
“This is a tough moment, may I be kind to myself”.
“I am proud of myself for trying”.

As a long time Yoga practitioner ..My Favorite is “Where the mind goes, energy flows.”

It means that whatever you focus your attention on, you invest your mental, emotional, and physical resources into, causing that thing to grow, intensify, and become your reality. There is real science available today that shows how brain patterns are altered by the biology of belief. I think we all know this intuitively, however we need to take it to the next step and be conscious of how our thoughts impact our cellular health.
This doesn’t mean ignoring challenges or pretending everything is perfect. It means noticing, feeling, learning — and then allowing yourself to move forward with grace rather than self-criticism.

If you have been a patient of mine for any length of time then you have heard me say…

Ask yourself often: “Does this nourish me?” Small, consistent good for me choices have a bigger impact on healthspan and longevity than grand gestures and the over optimization that we see in our Bio-Hacking World.

Self-Care as Heart Care

  • Take small, meaningful actions instead of waiting for the “perfect” plan
  • Model the behaviors you want your children to see
  • Reinforce positive patterns in relationships rather than focusing on flaws
  • Speak about how things make you feel and look for solutions
  • Set compassionate boundaries — are you saying yes to others at the expense of yourself? (This one is still a practice for me, too.)

A grateful, intentional mindset can be a powerful ally. Simple mantras / affirmations like:

“I am strong and supported.”
“I am becoming the best version of myself.”
“I have what I need.”
These can gently shift how your nervous system — and your heart — experience the day.

The Heart at the Center of the Body

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the heart is known as the “king” of all organs. Other systems will sacrifice their own energy to keep the heart in balance. This is why chronic stress, worry, emotional overload, poor sleep, blood sugar swings, inflammation, toxic overload or nutrient depletion do not often show up as heart-related patterns first.

Your body is always communicating — offering clues, nudges, and quiet reminders when something needs attention.

The Heart of It All

Heart health is not just about preventing disease. It’s about:

  • Feeling calm and resilient under stress
  • Supporting healthy circulation and energy
  • Sleeping well
  • Movement and flow
  • Feeling connected — to yourself and others
  • Living with purpose, passion, and presence

This Heart Month, consider this an invitation to listen more closely. To care for your heart not only through food and labs, but through kindness, boundaries, rest, and meaningful connection.

Your heart works tirelessly for you. A little love goes a long way and we all could use move love and joy!
