Every few months, it seems a new health trend captures everyone’s attention. Lately, peptides have become one of the most talked-about tools in wellness, longevity, weight loss, and recovery. Patients are asking about them, social media is buzzing, and advertisements promise everything from fat loss to glowing skin.
I have been quietly sitting on the sidelines, talking to patients in clinic about options, however I think it is time to write about them and provide a perspective from a Natural Functional Medicine approach.
You have probably wonder why it took me so long…LOL.
So, what exactly are peptides, and where do they fit into a Natural Functional Medicine approach?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids—the building blocks of proteins. Your body naturally produces hundreds of peptides that act as messengers, helping regulate important functions like:
Think of peptides as little communication signals that tell your cells what to do.
Certain therapeutic peptides are being studied and prescribed to support:
Some peptide medications, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists, have shown remarkable benefits for people struggling with obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes.
These therapies can be powerful tools—but they are not magic bullets.
As a Natural Functional Medicine practitioner, I believe peptides are tools, not foundations.
Before considering any advanced therapy, I always ask:
Because no peptide can replace the fundamentals.
I encourage my patients to focus on:
✓ Nourishing whole foods
✓ Protein intake
✓ Strength training and movement
✓ Stress resilience
✓ Sleep quality
✓ Gut health and digestion
✓ Reducing toxic burden
✓ Supporting detoxification pathways
When these foundations are strong, the body often responds beautifully—and sometimes additional therapies become more effective.
GLP-1
Supports satiety and blood sugar balance.
You can naturally stimulate GLP-1 through:
Collagen Peptides
Collagen peptides support healthy skin, joints, and connective tissue.
Natural sources include:
Antimicrobial Peptides
These are part of your immune defense and help maintain a healthy gut microbiome.
They are influenced by:
Because peptides are trending, many products are now available online. Unfortunately, not all products are created equal. For more information Dr Andrew Huberman recently did a Podcast episode all about Peptides. Click Here.
Things I encourage patients to consider:
I hesitate a little saying this however I would suggest that Peptide therapy may be worth exploring for individuals who need to put out the fire and are dealing with:
But the best outcomes occur when peptides are combined with lifestyle, nutrition, and addressing root causes.
Health isn’t about chasing the latest trend.
It’s about creating an environment where the body can do what it was designed to do: heal, adapt, and thrive.
Peptides may have a place. If you consider them then they work best when built upon a strong foundation of nutrition, movement, sleep, stress resilience, and gut health.
Because true wellness is found in the small daily choices that nourish your mind, body, and soul
“I’m excited about the future of research and the possibilities various therapies offer. But I remain committed to a simple principle: foundations first. Let’s support the body’s innate wisdom and use advanced tools thoughtfully—not as shortcuts, but as partners in the healing journey.”
Have a healthy week and stay cool this summer
