DOCTOR PIA’S PLANT BASED PALEO DIET

I get asked all the time what I eat. If we had to put a name on it this is it:

A Plant Based Paleo Diet.

Having said that, all of us are unique and we have different food sensitivities and diet choices so there might be some aspects of the Plant Based Paleo Diet that will need to be modified. We can however all agreed hat we should be eating a lot more plants and a lot less processed not found in nature type foods.

Focus on the glycemic load of your diet.

Blood sugar Problems are one of the biggest issues in America today, whether you are Diabetic, Pre-diabetic, Insulin Resistant or have Reactive Hypoglycemia we all can do a better job managing the amount of high sugar and refined carbs we eat. We can also do a better job of not waiting till we are about to crash to eat too.. (guilty of this one)

Focus on more protein and fats. Nuts (not peanuts), seeds (flax, chia, hemp, sesame, pumpkin), coconut, avocados, sardines, olive oil.

Eat the right fats. Stay away from most vegetable oils such as canola, sunflower, corn, and especially soybean oil, which now comprises about 10 percent of our calories.

Focus instead on omega 3 fats, nuts, coconut, and avocados and yes, even saturated fat from grass fed or sustainably raised animals.

Eat mostly plants – lots of low glycemic vegetables and fruits. This should be 75 percent of your diet and your plate. I usually make 2 to 3 vegetable dishes per meal. Add to a bowl of leafy greens for added nutrients

Focus on nuts and seeds. They are full of protein, minerals, and good fats and they lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Avoid dairy – It is highly processed and not for humans. Try goat or sheep products, only as a treat and always organic.

Avoid gluten –if you are not gluten sensitive, then consider it an occasional treat and look for sprouted sources.

Eat gluten-free whole grains sparingly – Quinoa, buckwheat etc as they still raise blood sugar and can trigger autoimmunity.

Eat beans sparingly – lentils are best. Stay away from big starchy beans.

Eat organic and wild sources of meat, fish or fowl. Vegetables should take center stage and meat / fish or fowl should be a side dish.

Think of sugar as an occasional treat – Honey, palm sugar etc. Sugar free would be best and it is very addictive and hard for most to have as a treat. This applies to alcohol too!!!
